Special show for womxn of colour audiences plus a post show Sista Circle to reflect on themes of The Legends of Them by Sutara Gayle, hosted by Lady Phyll (pictured – founder of UK Black Pride).

A Sista Circle is a sharing of experiences, wisdom, and support in a safe and nurturing environment, fostering connection and empowerment among wxmen of colour. 

The post-show Sista Circle will create space to honor and uplift womxn of colour, celebrating their strength, resilience, and interconnectedness through discussing the transformative power of “The Legends of Them”. 

Please note: this show is aimed at womxn, femmes and NBs of colour but no-one will be turned away.

Lady Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is an award-winning community organiser and activist. She is the co-founder and executive director of UK Black Pride, the world’s largest free Black Pride celebration; the executive director of international LGBTQ human rights charity Kaleidoscope Trust; and a public speaker and writer focusing on race, gender, class, sexuality and their intersections.

This special event is in honour of the world premiere of The Legends of Them by Sutara Gayle AKA Lorna Gee, which opens at Brixton House from 14-30 September.

ABOUT

Sutara Gayle is a British-Jamaican actress with a wealth of credits spanning the last 3 decades across both drama & comedy. In 2023 she can be seen playing Gemma Whiteley in the Britbox/BBC One crime drama series Magpie Murders and she’s due to star in  the new season of Outlander, Supacell and Black Cake. In 2022 she starred in the 5th series of the BBC’s popular crime drama Strike. She has appeared in a number of critically acclaimed BBC shows such as hit comedy Ghosts, Silent Witness, the Jimmy McGovern BAFTA nominated drama Anthony and played Linda in Steve McQueen’s Golden Globe winning Small Axe. Her theatre credits include Paradise (National Theatre), Tina: The Tina Turner Musical (Aldwych Theatre), A Tale of Two Cities (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), Guys and Dolls (Savoy Theatre and UK tour), and At the Table and Almost Nothing (Royal Court Theatre). For film, Viral, Anthony, Carmilla, A Caribbean Dream, SuperBob, The Dark Night and Run Fatboy Run


As Lorna Gee, she is the 2012 BEFFTA and HiCrEc award winner for outstanding contribution to reggae music. The 1985 smash hit ‘Gotta Find a Way’ placed her at the top of the Reggae charts for 6 weeks for which she received recognition with two BBC Radio London Reggae Awards for Best Female Artist 1985 and 1986. Lorna has been crowned one of the Queens of Lovers Rock with fellow singers Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson. She was presented with the prestigious Lovers Rock Gala Award for her contribution to Lovers Rock music at The Brixton Academy in 2008.

Martina Laird is a Trinidadian British actor and director probably best known for portraying popular character Comfort Jones on BBC’s flagship drama Casualty – in her five years on the show she won two acting awards for the role. 

Since 2016, performances in several Shakespeare plays: The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, The Tempest and Henry IV, Coriolanus and All’s Well That Ends Well. In 2019, Laird appeared in the August Wilson play King Hedley II, alongside Lenny Henry, at Stratford East.

More recently, Martina played the role of Lashana in Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid, and was part of the cast of Sharon Horgan’s Sky Atlantic TV show Dreamland. 

Jo McInnes directs. Jo McInnes is an actor, director and the Associate Director of Hackney Showroom. She is currently playing the Nurse in Rebecca Freknell’s Romeo & Juliet at the Almeida. Recent credits include: Medea (Soho Place), The Corn is Green (National Theatre); The Jungle (Old Vic, West End, St Ann’s Warehouse).

As director credits include: For All The Women Who Thought They Were Mad (Hackney Showroom) The Hardest Rain (The Old Vic), 36 Phone Calls (Hampstead Theatre), Another Place (Theatre Royal Plymouth), I Can Hear You (RSC and Royal Court Theatre), Carpe Diem (National Theatre), Running on Empty (Soho Theatre), Vera, Vera, Vera, Red Bud (Royal Court Theatre), Christmas (Bush Theatre). Her television credits include The Verdict.

From the bomb-site Bicycle racers in post-war 1940s London, to the Acid House ravers of 1980s Northern England, the Museum of Youth Culture empowers the extraordinary everyday stories of growing up in Britain.

Olive Brooklyn 
With deep ties to Brixton’s music scene, Olive Brooklyn’s journey is noteworthy. From the 1980s onwards, she displayed her skills on stages and collaborated with sounds like Small Axe, Luv Injection, Youth and Promotion, and First Class Sound. Olive has also shared many stages with some of the greatest male and female artists, emphasizing the lasting impact of music and creativity on those who cherish authentic artistry.

Lioness Fonts 
Lioness Fonts, born in the Caribbean Island of Dominica is a Conscious Reggae artist hailing from London UK. A singer/songwriter and producer versatile in her deliverance Lioness Fonts is a modern day artist who is a throw back from the classic Reggae era continuing the tradition of story telling in her own unique way.  With two albums released, Lioness Fonts has worked extensively with Reggae producers in Europe giving them her brand of Reggae. This modern day Nubian Queen presents in her own unique style – a force to be heard and seen. 

Teshay Makeda
The award winning South London Native Teshay Makeda, fuses Reggae, Soul & Rnb creating her own dynamic genre dubbed ’Roots Soul’. Teshay Makeda uses her music to spread messages of divinity and higher power. Her songwriting is a vibrant, contemporary take on expressing spirituality through song. Makeda recorded her highly anticipated 8 track EP ‘Omega Mother Goddess’. Released in 2021, this EP was shortlisted for Reggaeville’s ‘Album of the Year’ it explores the Roots and Soul of the ‘Divine Feminine’, providing a quirky introduction to Teshay Makeda’s Jamaican influenced London twang. Known for her powerful vocals, Teshay Makeda’s voice exudes her purpose to heal, ground, and connect with her listeners.

The Best of the Best & Wurst of the Wurst of Eurovision was a jam-packed day in Liverpool for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. With sensational drag and cabaret talent, we payed homage to legendary acts and iconic Eurovision moments as they battle it out for ultimate glory.

Hosted by Liverpudlian superstar Ms Sharon Le Grand, live acts included Ginny Lemon, Don One, NIcky, Midgitte Bardot, Eat Me, Bolly Illusion and our very own Eurotroupe. Plus DJ Lucia Blayke (founder, Trans Pride).

The Best & The Wurst of Eurovision was commissioned by Liverpool City Council as part of EuroFestival.

 

Meet the Trustees

Hackney Showroom is proud to work with a talented Board of Trustees that support our aims of producing outstanding live performance, fostering the careers of experimental theatre artists and creating a home where locals and artists can thrive.

Our Trustees have a wealth of experience in theatre, television and business and finance.

Ikky Elyas is an actor and writer who grew up on Queen’s Drive in the 1990s and is happy to see the estate being regenerated. Joining Hackney Showroom Young Actors in 2016 spurred on his love for theatre, leading to a surge of off-West End gigs. Ikky won the Norman Beaton Fellowship, resulting in a contract with BBC Radio Drama and extensive experience in radio and voice acting. More recently, he has been directing shorts with Theatre503, and is seeking to work with a writer to develop a feature length dystopian sci-fi film.

Peter Huntley is Founder of Smart Entertainment – a theatrical executive producer and general manager working in the UK and internationally. He has previously self-produced alongside working for major producers such as Sonia Friedman Productions and Shakespeare’s Globe.

Rowan Lindsay is a Partner at leading accountancy firm Nyman Lisbon Paul. He has over 25 years of experience working with small, medium and large organisations. This wide-ranging experience puts him in an excellent position to lever the best strategies and practices to benefit Hackney Showroom. Rowan offers a broad skill set including financial compliance, systems, planning, modelling and forecasting.

Cat March is the Head of Corporate Development at The Old Vic, driving income through corporate fundraising. After studying for an MA in Theatre & Performance at Sheffield University, Cat found a love of contemporary, live, and performance art before beginning a fundraising career in the Arcola Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East. She later spent 3 years at Tate, managing a portfolio of large scale corporate partnerships in support of some of the galleries’ best-known programmes, including BMW Tate Live, the UNIQLO Tate Lates and The EY Tate Arts Partnership.

Sarah Needham is a broadcast media consultant with 25 years in the television industry working across live sports, ballet, opera and documentary series – specialising in large-scale live productions.  Sarah has been working as a freelance Production Consultant with Brouhaha Media for the past 5 years, and has previously worked with organisations such as BSkyB, Hat Trick Productions and Endemol.

Jac O’Kody is a choreographer, writer & lyricist. Originally having trained as a musical theatre performer, Jac shifted her focus to arts education and wellbeing. Jac is the founder of O’Kody Arts and Black Books Matter UK, which between them run a range of accessible arts programmes in a wide range of disciplines for young people, staff  training and producing theatres –  that ensures all stories are heard.

James Pidgeon is currently Executive Director at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, one of the largest producing theatres in London. Previously, James was Director & Chief Executive at Shoreditch Town Hall in south Hackney, and held producing and administration roles at the National Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre and Shakespeare’s Globe. James sits on the Advisory Board of Theatre Re and is a Trustee of Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Dawn Walton (Chair of Board) is Artistic Director of Mamamissi Ltd, an independent theatre, film and radio production company, and an award-winning director of TV and theatre. Dawn is founder and former Artistic Director/CEO of Eclipse Theatre. In 2020 Dawn was awarded the OBE for Services to Theatre. Previous theatre productions includeThe Death of a Black Man (Hampstead Theatre); The Gift (Eclipse Theatre/Belgrade Theatre/Theatre Royal Stratford East);  salt (Schaubühne/Public Theater/Royal Court/ Summerhall)and Black Men Walking (Eclipse Theatre/Royal Court/Royal Exchange/UK Tour). Dawn also has extensive experience as a director for TV salt (BBC4/Milk&Honey – WINNER of the Grierson Award for Best Arts Documentary 2022). Short films includes:Samuel’s Trousers and 10by10 (BBC/The Space). 

Becky Wootton has 20 years experience working in London theatres. She is Director of Audiences at Shakespeare’s Globe overseeing a team of 120+ in marketing, digital, press, ticketing and sales, retail, visitor and audience operations including guided tours and over 700 Volunteers. Previously she was Deputy Director of Audiences at the National Theatre and has also worked at the Royal Court Theatre, Orange Tree Theatre and Time Out.

THE PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Maximising audience and participation engagement is central to Hackney Showroom’s mission.

With a diverse slate of original new artistic projects, this is an exciting time to join Hackney Showroom and we are seeking a persuasive and dynamic person with an original, irreverent voice to communicate with a wide range of audiences, communities and stakeholders.

This is a hands-on role and we are looking for someone to design and deliver campaigns to maximise audience reach for our in-house and touring shows and deliver localised marketing campaigns for our cultural offer to our neighbourhood.

You will be someone that has a keen eye for design, your finger on the pulse of underground and alternative arts and culture scenes, an instinct for forming networks and a flair for using storytelling to paint a picture of our work to engage audiences.
